Imagine I’m hosting a party, and you’re invited. I’m not here to tell you how to dance, or what to drink or eat. I’m here to set the mood — to arrange the furniture in a way that allows you to comfortably walk around and sit and chat; and to play some lively but relaxing music to help you feel at ease.
So, to set the mood of the community, I want you to keep these things in mind…
The guiding principles
- I (Alex) am here to help with the community, not run the show.
- It’s up to you what you want to do with, and what you get out of, the community.
- I’m always open to any, and all, feedback and suggestions.
- The community will change over time.
- It should be nurturing — a give and take: you receive help, and you also provide help.
- Hear people out — try and always understand where they’re coming from. You don’t have to agree with them, but rational discourse requires empathy.
- Follow The Golden Rule: treat others how you feel you should be treated.
Note that these are deliberately vague. Again, I’m not here to be The Soup Nazi of the party, I’m just here to help you have a good time.
And, as mentioned, the community will naturally evolve and change, and that’s wonderful. That’s when you know everyone is invested. When they’re giving input. Taking input. Speaking up. Reaching out.
But if you ever need a guiding light to fall back on, feel free to revisit the evergreen principles above.
